Intern Role Profile - Business Management
Name: Billie Hodgson
Role: Business Management
Department: UK Strategic Search
Location: CP, London
Hey everyone ! My name is Billie and I currently study BA Business at Nottingham Trent University. For me studying business is great because you learn about so many different aspects to the business world. This is why it was important for me to get a placement that could give me exposure to lots of different projects/departments to find out what I want to do in the future. Microsoft is the perfect place for this! Working for an international company that operates in many markets is a great way to learn what it takes to run a successful business.
So the application stage… It’s pretty lengthy but well worth the effort! Microsoft has a slightly different approach to get the best candidates. The whole process is all about getting to know you. You start with an online application which is just standard questions about why you want to work for Microsoft this is followed by a situational strengths test. Then you will have a one-way video interview where there is no one at the other end but pre –recorded questions will be asked then a follow up skype interview (Its very casual more like a chat).
Finally, if you get to this stage you will be invited to an assessment centre. Make sure you know yourself inside out so you can really sell yourself throughout the whole process, it’s all well and good having experience and skills but if you need to be able to draw on these throughout the process. It is daunting and they understand this so just try and be confident and most importantly be yourself!
My Top Tips for getting through the application process!
Be yourself. As cliché as it sounds it’s the best advice anyone could give you. Don’t put on an act, the interviewers do this day in day out they will see straight through it.
Ask questions. Engage in the interview stage, ask about the roles, opportunities and learn about what the company can offer you.
Nothing is irrelevant. Use all your experience; charity work or part time job they want to hear it all!
I work in the Business Management team for UK Strategic Search. Working in Business Management is all about developing relationships across the business in order to make sure that you can implement strategy and keep the department running efficiently. I love working in this team as it gives me so much exposure to different departments whilst letting me work on some exciting projects and events.
One of my biggest highlights was being on the planning team for the EMEA Search Summit. We brought 250 employees together from UK, US, France and many more countries to Dublin to talk about the future of search. It was an amazing event where we got to hear from the head of Global Search about the upcoming year. Outside of my role I am involved with other projects such as Milkround and Tech Traineeship. There is so many opportunities to get involved with other departments or teams and it’s a great way to make the most of your time and network.

My Top Tip
There are many tips that can make a difference towards your application and reading the blog itself is a really good place to start with. Here is an important tip that in my opinion is applicable to everyone:
• Step outside your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to offer a different perspective on things. That’s why we are here!
