Intern Role Profile - FY16 Intern of the Year
Name: Anastasia Hill
Role: Sales Solutions Specialist
Hey everyone, my name is Tansy and I work in our Azure sales team and my role before anything else is to be customer obsessed. Azure is Microsoft’s Cloud Platform and is one of the fastest growing areas of our business and of the technology industry! Working in a client facing role is really exciting and my focus is always finding the best solution for the customer. The benefit of starting as an intern is that I have worked on so many different projects with my team- from running customer workshops to recruiting 80 new team members- it’s been an incredible whirlwind!
I am a solution seller. This means our method of selling is providing world class technology to help solve our customers’ issues and achieve their objectives. There is no such thing as a ‘typical day’, I could be with customers running workshops, working with our partners on customer engagements, supporting the sales team with resources, presentations and data, helping to recruit new team members through events and even going to a few parties!
Being in sales is incredibly fast paced but I wouldn’t have it any other way, the constant change makes the role exciting. I’ve been part of an incredibly supportive team who have given me every chance to learn and be successful- from working with me on presentations through to taking me to their biggest customer meetings, they’ve made this a truly unforgettable year!
Outside My Role
Not only have I enjoyed my role but I’ve also had the opportunity to be involved with projects in other areas of the business. One of the projects that I have become deeply passionate about is the Tech Traineeship programme, this is a scheme that helps sixteen - eighteen year olds join our business for six weeks at a time. They are young people who are currently out of employment and education with the aim of helping them to become ‘apprenticeship ready’. It was a privilege to be a part of this small but mighty team, with only six of us working on this project I can honestly say I’ve never worked with such talented individuals.
I also help to deliver Women in Leadership sessions to some local secondary schools and to some small groups of under graduates. For me this could involve speaking to a large group of women, leading round table discussions or being a panel speaker. This is something I have become incredibly passionate about and believe is vital for the future of our industry, not just our company. Both of these projects have taught me so much about working with people, leading groups and public speaking and this has helped me to develop as an individual.
Every quarter we have a UK Town Hall- this is a companywide meeting that all employees attend or Skype into. I had the pleasure of hosting our most recent Town Hall which means helping to put together content, running the event and working with speakers such as our UK General Manger, Michel Van Der Bel and introducing to the stage our Global CEO Satya Nadella. It was such an honour to be a part of this event and an experience I will never forget.
My second highlight was towards the end of my placement. We were invited to an Intern Awards ceremony and at this event I was lucky enough to be awarded Intern of the Year, this was an incredible experience and a truly unforgettable end to the best year. It’s an amazing feeling to have your managers put you forward for this award, let alone win it!
Advice if you’re applying
If you’ve read advice from other interns on this blog, you’ll know by now that being yourself is vital. Microsoft hire you for your individual potential. It’s not a case of competing against other candidates, instead it’s about being the best you can be. However, the best advice I can give is to think about the contribution you can make to Microsoft. When I applied I kept thinking of Microsoft as the huge multi-national, which of course it is, but it’s made up of individuals. Managers, colleagues and friends that you’ll work with, will all have an effect on you, learn from you and help you. What you can bring to your team and the people you work with is so important and you will make a difference.
