"Becoming a Microsoft intern sounds like a great opportunity, and so it is"

You are entering a world full of new opportunities, people and challenges, which may even be confusing and too complex for a newcomer. Make the most of joining the great team of extremely talented and smart people. Our Polish interns, which have already made their way through their first internship months are sharing their secrets about how to make the most of your internship at Microsoft.

Be proactive

Show your initiative, talk with people and confidently share your ideas. If you hear about an interesting project, speak up about what you want to be involved in. Do more than everyone is expecting from you. Be motivated and give 200% of yourself.

Attend meetings

One of the most valuable learnings throughout the internship comes from the meetings you attend. Ask your manager for invitation to all meetings that are not confidential. Although you may not be able to participate in the discussion (not knowing enough details) all the info you will hear is priceless. New campaigns, partnerships, current status, future plans and even more importantly the way your team works on them - are a great help to understanding the business.
Use lunch-, coffee- and every other break in a productive way
Make the best use of the fact that you are surrounded by talented and interesting people. Get to know your team - ask them about their career development, experiences, and any tips they may have for you. Get to know other teams and what are their main tasks. The easiest way to do it, is to ask other interns to describe their current projects to you. In the beginning of our internship we came up with an idea for a project "Date Lunch with Microsoftie". All of us were inviting colleagues from our teams to lunches with other interns. We used these opportunities to get to know the company, its structure, its main activities and its people better. By doing so you can decide which position and team suits you best, so that you can apply for graduate positions in future.

Value your own and others' time

While working on your tasks, you will most probably face some challenges that you won't be able to manage on your own. Don't be afraid to ask more experienced coworkers for help, but be wise about it. Before addressing your colleagues or your manager, read carefully all the materials and e-mails exchanged on the topic, prepare a list of questions and re-think all the issues that you would like to discuss. That way you can handle all your struggles at once and won't need to interrupt others every time a new issue arises.

Remember, that this internship should first serve YOU. Use every opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge, explore the company’s knowledge sharing recourses, don’t be afraid of challenging tasks, which require learning something new, in order to complete them. Talk to your colleagues, ask as many question as you may have.

Call to action:

Remember, your internship is your time and your investment in your future long-lasting career. "You don't have to be great to start, but have to get started to be great". Zig Ziglar.
