Introducing the 'Get On' Initiative - by Ella Brown

Get On

‘Get On’ is Microsoft’s citizenship initiative that is a part of the global programme ‘Youth Spark’. Over three years, Microsoft UK is committed to helping 300,000 16-24 year olds Get Inspired, Get Skilled or Get A Job.

Led by the Corporate Affairs department within Microsoft, the role of outreach is down to a group of enthusiastic and passionate interns! My name is Ella Brown and I am this year’s Citizenship Lead, along with Emilia Udale who helps co-lead the team with myself. We work as the contact for the team and provide support and guidance where we can across all three of the Get On teams.

“For me, Get On is a chance to use what I have learnt from the Microsoft application process and to give something back!” Emilia, Get On Co-Lead

The Team

The Get On team is made up of 35 interns based in our London and Reading offices. We have three separate teams consisting of Schools, Events and Work Experience.

london Get onThe Schools team focus on reaching out to local areas to attend careers fairs, provide workshops on CVs, application processes, opportunities after school and lead inspiration sessions. They are our largest Get On team of the year with 18 interns involved and so farhave reached out to over 400 students. An attendee to one of the Get On workshops could not speak highly enough of the session, saying: “the presentation was great to engage the students and really focused their thoughts on what work experience opportunities are out there for them.”**

Using a similar format of information sessions, the Events teams hold bi-monthly ‘inspiration afternoons’inour London and Reading officesfor all to enjoyanddiscover how to take the first steps into a job role through various opportunities including apprenticeships, graduate roles, contracting and even how you could become part of the Microsoft family!

A new edition to this year is the Work Experience team. As part of our Get A Job section, we have recently begun taking on work experience candidates to learn about life inside Microsoft. All of the 118 interns this year will have an opportunity to take on a work experience candidate to show them their role within the company and equip them with valuable experience and skills to help them improve their chances of getting a job.

Social Media

As well as helping to oversee the team, I also run the Get On social media channels. We use this platform to help us promote our events and opportunities for people to get involved and gain an insight into life at Microsoft. We also try to post useful tips and advice on how to find a job, interview techniques as well as keeping in contact with as many ‘Get Onners’ as possible!

What does the team think?

After being part of the team fortwo shortmonths, everybody has already become one as part of the Get On family! Diego from our London Events team was blown away by how much of an impact being part of the Get On team really had, as he said it is “more inspirational than I ever thought possible”.

The programme has even helped the team realise how much their role within both Get On and Microsoft gives them the leverage to help others.

*“Being able to share our experiences with others through ‘Get On’ has really made me appreciate my role and has also shown me how companies such as Microsoft can empower the next generation in the UK”– *Joel Goodhall, Events Team.

I personally feel that being the Citizenship Lead is not only my job, but it has now become my passion. I feel so fortunate to be part of this team as my core role means that I can be fully engaged and help both the team and those we are reaching out to. It is brilliant to see Microsoft employees recognising the programme and offering to provide their help when needed, and it’s apparent that the Get On initiative is something that is close to everyone’s hearts.

Last year the Get On team inspired over 18,000 16-24 year olds and this year we hope to meet (or even exceed) that number! I am hoping for a brilliant year for all of the Get On team, from all of the great efforts and passion we have seen so far, it looks like we have a fantastic year ahead of us!
