OLIVIA IFRIM, Software Engineering Development Intern

olivia ifrim 2Hey! My name is Olivia and I’m a Software Engineering Development Intern at Microsoft.6 months into my internship and I’m still enjoying the sound of that as much as I did on my first day, if not more.

A bit about myself, I’m studying Computer Science at The University of Birmingham. My degree involves a combination of software development, engineering, AI, robotics and Maths. I’m very passionate about innovation and technology, using intelligent systems for improvements in entertainment, lifestyle and education.

Now to the fun stuff, my job! I work for Soho Productions, which is a first party studio in the Interactive Business Division of Microsoft, located in central London. Our main focuses are XBOX, Kinect and TV.

The first project I’ve worked on at Soho was the award winning Kinect Sesame Street TV Season 2, which we have shipped just a month ago, so it’s been a big part of my internship so far. It’s an innovative and educational take on interactive TV, instead of watching Sesame Street episodes passively, the kids are encouraged to join in and throw pineapples with Grover, clap for correct words with Guy Smiley or sing with Elmo and Stella. I’ve seen kids jumping up and down with excitement after playing it, screaming for more, so I must tell you in terms of job satisfaction it doesn’t get much better than that!

As a development intern at Microsoft, you are given a great opportunity to build up your engineering skills and become a part of a team of experienced engineers. There are no coffee cups involved, there’s lots of code to be written and reviewed though! It can be a bit daunting, being the most junior person on a team working along engineers with 10+ years of experience in the industry but hey, who doesn’t love an intern who asks lots of questions and challenges everything? If I had to give you some advice, it would be just that, question everything, learn as much as you can every day, get involved in the areas of the project that you want to work in and most importantly, work hard and smart!

My first 6 months with Microsoft have been packed with adventure, excitement, innovation and lots of hard work and I’m sure the next 6 months will easily top that. Working in Soho is an absolute pleasure, whether I’m at my desk listening to loud music and writing code, playing pool at lunchtime with the other interns or talking about C++ features and coding standards, I can’t think of a better place to work in. The company culture is absolutely fantastic and the people are extraordinary.

University gives you the skills you need to learn everything else, but an internship gives you an opportunity to actually work in the industry and see how it’s done. And an internship at Microsoft gives you more opportunity than you can ever imagine, it opens a whole new world of possibilities!
